MARSHVILLE
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

January 23rd, 2010

Over the course of several weeks we are looking into the Faces of Christ.  The idea came to me after reading the introduction to a collection of essays written by Andree’ Seu entitled Normal Kingdom  Business.  The introduction contains an e-mail exchange between Seu and a colleague, Ronnie Rudd.  Seu posed the question, what do you think Jesus did for fun?  Rudd’s response –

I’ll be he liked to run and was fast.  He probably had a way of making you laugh and cry simultaneously.  Fishing was boring for him because he caught one each time he threw his line in the water, since fish are not plagued with unbelief.  When he baked unleavened bread, the loaf wanted to rise in tribute, yeast or no.  I guess he learned to use ‘Peace, be still’ in order to get some sleep, as all of creation was cacophonous in its symphony of praise to him.  Above all, I think he is a cool and ultimately groovy guy and I look forward to us hanging out for the next few eternities, hey?”

In the 16th chapter of Matthew, Jesus asks Peter, “who do you say that I am?”  It’s a good question for all of us to consider.  Is Jesus friend?  Is Jesus Lord?  Do we know enough about him to begin to even explain who he is?  I hope that we have the opportunity to ponder the question daily.  And know that we’re here to help with the answers.
